The voluminous boubou, balanced frontal composition, lowered camera angle, and the subject's direct gaze convey a sense of self-confidence and monumentality well-suited to the social stature of the sitter. His wealth and elevated status are clear from his exquisite boubou and large portable radio. In Mopti during the late 1970s, the Trident-brand radio, pictured here, was considered the finest. According to Malick Sitou, only Fulani, particularly traders, could have afforded such expensive possessions at the time.
