This print--a rare artist's proof with a warm tone block and pencil annotations--was based on a drawing done on Martha's Vineyard in the mid-1920s. Thomas Hart Benton was fascinated by the use of old-fashioned scythes to cut the island's uneven fields, where modern machine methods proved impractical.
